Ticonderoga boys prepare for winter campaign

TICONDEROGA - With increased depth, it promises to be a good season for the Ticonderoga boys indoor track team.

"I expect our team to be right in the mix of the Section VII race this season," Coach Walt Thorne said. "There should be a fierce competition amongst the teams. I don't think we can afford to overlook anyone."

The Sentinels have 21 athletes returning this winter and have 10 newcomers, giving Ti its deepest team in years.

Jay Berube, Josh Cook and Joe LaPerle, all state championship meet qualifiers in cross country, are back in the distance events. They joined by veterans Kevin Densmore and Javeed Nazir and rookie Brandon Charboneau.

The Sentinels figure to again in strong in the sprints and jumps. Returning to the speed events are Michael Barber, Luke Bartlett, Ryan Borho, James Cook, Jacob Demarais, Kelly Dunn, Coleman Granger, Jarryn Granger, Jonathyn Granger, Jay Hebert, Ken Johnson, Patrick Lonergan and Arto Nadeau. They're joined by rookies Daniel Hermann, Kenneth Johnston, Wesley Porter and Dennis Townes.

Ryan Borho, Steven Bussey, Corey King, Adam Losher and Josh Ross return to the throwing events. New throwers are Blake Gautreau, Martin Glazer, Cody O'Hara, Wesley Porter, Patrick Taylor and Dennis Townes.

"Team balance will be our biggest strength and with 10 new athletes out for track we should be in pretty good shape this season," Thorne said. "Michael Barber, Jonathyn Granger, Kelly Dunn, Jay Hebert, will lead the sprinters and jumpers. Jay Berube, Joshua Cook, Kevin Densmore, Patrick Lonergan and Joe LaPerle will lead the distance and middle distance events. Joss Ross will lead the throwers along with the new comers Ryan Borho, Jacob Demarais who if they progress as expected should provide much needed points in the Throwing events by season's end.

"Our youth and having 10 new athletes with little or no experience could be considered a weakness," he continued. "Hopefully they will learn the skills needed to be competitive over the next several weeks and be an asset to the team."

Assisting Thorne with the team are coaches Phil Kneller with the throws, Jay Wells with the distance events, Ellie Berube with the sprints and distance athletes and Rick Merrill with the jumps.
