Christmas Express headed to Schroon

SCHROON LAKE - The Christmas Express is headed to Schroon Lake and North Hudson.

The annual Christmas wish program is now collecting donations.

"As children's heads are filled with thoughts of Santa, the elves at Christmas Express are very busy and extremely concerned about how they will fulfill all those Christmas wishes that create holiday memories and magic," said Patti Mehm of the Christmas Express program. "The current economic situation has had a huge impact on the number of families seeking assistance, as well limiting those able to give this holiday season."

Each year Christmas Express volunteers collect toys for approximately 50 local children, ranging in age from infants to 13 years old. Those special items are then delivered to each household.

A "Wish Tree" is set up at Grand Union on Main Street in Schroon Lake. The children have designated specific items that they are hoping to receive this year - which are listed on each "wish." People are asked to take a "wish," purchase the gift and place the unwrapped item in one of the drop box locations no later than Dec. 18.

Drop boxes are located at Grand Union, Glens Falls Bank, Senior Housing and the Senior Center.

There will also be holiday cans for cash donations located at area businesses. Checks can also be mailed to Christmas Express, 276 Alder Meadow Road, Schroon Lake 12870.

"The 'wishes' are so sweet and simple, like warm boots or a baby doll,"Mehm said. "They touch my heart and puts the season into perspective for me."
