The Gear Source

NORTH CREEK - While preparing for the winter ski season Jeff Palka, owner of The Gear Source, an outdoor outfitting store in North Creek is settling into a new retail home just off Route 28 on Ordway Lane this week. His move from the location on Bridge Street took place during the month of November and the new location is now open for business.

Palka of North River has hoped to move to a Route 28 location since he started his business and when the former location of Emmy's Video was put on the market, he reached an agreement with owner Keitan and Saraha Millington to rent the building. The building can now be seen from the highway and has positively influenced business, according to Palka.

"There just was not enough traffic at the old location to generate substantial business," said Palka. "We are now on the route to downtown from Gore."

In its new location, The Gear Source has expanded its tuning capabilities product line as well as seen a 40% increase in preseason business.

"Since the move, we have already done as much tuning as we did during the entire season last year," said Palka.

Nate Pelton of North Creek Rafting Co. handles the tuning for The Gear Source.

Aside from selling new name brand outdoor products, The Gear Source also serves as a consignment shop for those same products.

"I love consignment stores," said Palka. "And I wanted my store to be both."

The Gear Source recently introduced an American-made line of skies called Icelantic. They also offer discontinued Gore rentals for affordable prices.

"I want to provide people with the opportunity to ski Gore and affordable skis are a way that everyone can do that," said Palka. "It also gets local kids skiing."

Palka acknowledged that many people come into the store now and had no idea that he was open at the old location for over two years.
