SCHROON LAKE - There is reason for optimism in the Schroon Lake girls basketball camp this season.
The Wildcats, who posted a 10-6 mark a year ago, return six players, including four starters - one of whom was the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference Division III Most Valuable Player.
Jocelyn Bowen, a guard, is the returning MVP. She led Schroon Lake in scoring with 16.7 points game in 2009-10. She also topped the club in assists with 5 a contest.
Also returning to the starting line up are Ashley Subra, Rebecca Armstrong and Kate Rose.
Armstrong led the 'Cats in rebounding last season, hauling down 8 caroms a game.
Liz Bessey and Gaberielle Harvey also return, giving Schroon a veteran roster.
Armstrong, Subra and Harvey will play forward positions.
Bowen, Rose and Bessey are at guard along with rookies Clare Whitney and Brianna DeZalia.
Newcomer Melanie Phillip is at center.
"This year's team is more athletic than in past years and will focus on defensive pressure to force turnovers and create easy scoring opportunities," Coach Lee Silvernail said.
"The girls have been working hard both on and off the court to get ready for the season," he added. "They have taken their conditioning to a much higher level this year and are highly motivated and committed to our defensive focus."
Also motivating the 'Cats is a brand new gym, expected to open this month after several years of construction.
"The girls are excited to get to play in our new gymnasium," Silvernail said. "Combine that with our strong following of Wildcat fans and it should make for an exciting atmosphere."
