Vikings searching for leadership

PORT HENRY - Moriah's girls basketball team has six players returning this season, but the Vikings remain a young club.

Moriah has just one senior, guard Janice Poirier.

"Leadership is a concern with a young team," Coach Steve Pelkey said. "Who will step up? The sophomores who came off the bench last year will need to step up as well as the two returning starters."

Leading the Vikings this campaign will be Hayley Waldron and Lauren Pelkey.

Waldron a post player, led the team in scoring and rebounding a year ago.

Pelkey, a guard, was the team's second-leading rebounder and playmaker. She was third on the team in scoring and steals.

Joining Waldron at center will be Stephanie Mauran and Courtney Carson.

At guard with Pelkey will be returnees Hailey Chapuk, Santana Martinez and Poirier along with rookies Emily Cutting and Natasha Pratt.

Brooke Sheffer returns at forward where she's joined by newcomers Jasmine Callis and Whitney Salerno.

The Vikings closed with a flourish last season en route to a 5-11 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference record and 7-13 overall mark.

"We need to pick up where we left off last year to expect to be competitive in our league," Pelkey said.
