Ticonderoga eyes another section title

TICONDEROGA - The Ticonderoga girls basketball team finished the 2009-10 season on a high note, winning its second straight Section VII Class C championship.

The Sentinels could do it again, but fans will need a program to tell who is on the court. Ti was hit hard by graduation, losing all five starters from that championship squad.

That won't deter Coach Shelly Young.

"Each year we set out to win sectionals," she said. "I feel this team has as good a chance as any to do that. They are working hard and coming together as a team."

The cupboard isn't completely bare for the Sentinels. Seven players return from last season's 6-10 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference and 8-13 overall club.

"I'm looking to several players to step and take over this season," Young said. "Leading the team will be Sarah teRiele and Kate Mercer in the post position with Kaylene Ross, Calsie Granger and Autumn Olcott at guard.

"I feel we will have a deep team this year with many players able to come in at any time," she added. "Jennell Coffin, Jess Blodgett, Jess Bagdriwicz, Delaney Bush, Sam McLaughlin, Meg Campney and Andrea Rich will round out the team."

teRiele, Mercer, Ross, Granger, Olcott, Coffin and Blodgett were all players on last season's team. While they offer experience, none was among Ti's leading scorers, rebounders and playmakers a year ago.
