Mountaineers lose leading seniors, rely on young talent

MINERVA - The Mountaineers are recovering from the loss of two solid players and starting seniors. They are also settling into their second season with coach Steve McNally who made the move after seven years with the girls varsity at Minerva\Newcomb.

Graduation took starting seniors Jesse Montanye and and Brandon Poulton, who lead in scoring and were also aggressive defenders.

Senior forward Roger Kelly will lead the starters. Juniors John Evans and Austin Williams will lead the team down low and should be successful in the paint, according to McNally.

McNally also looks to juniors Morgan Winslow and Dylan Saville to lead in guard positions.

McNally explained that this year's squad is young and still settling into a higher level of play.

"They are all going to see playing time," he said. "I really look forward to seeing the sophomores learn the fundamentals of the game and develop solid program for the future.

He expects Johnsburg to be the leaders in the league and for Johnsburg to give them some good competition for the league title.

The Mountaineers recently played in North Warrens Invitational Tournament and McNally is confident about their potential moving forward.

"I am very happy with the way they have been practicing," he said. "They are giving a lot of effort and that effort will pay off."
