VERGENNES - The holiday season will again be a busy one at American Legion Post 14 on Armory Lane in Vergennes.
Sunday afternoon, Dec. 19, both Santa Claus and Merlin the Magician will make appearances at the annual Children's Christmas Party scheduled from 2 - 4 pm. All area children up to 10 years of age and their parents are cordially invited. Refreshments will be served and a gift from Santa awaits each child.
Thursday, Dec. 23, it's the adults' turn to party. Both Legion members and the general public are invited to listen and dance to DJ music from Phat Entertainment from 2- 8 pm while enjoying the spirit of the season. In conjunction with the party, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 14 is sponsoring a Christmas raffle with all proceeds to benefit Bixby Library children's programs. The prizes are all expertly handcrafted by Ed Symula, Finance Officer for the squadron, and include a cherry and maple end table valued at $479, a wooden motorcycle rocker for young children ($300) and a $90 wooden cutting board.
Tickets are available at Post 14 or at the Bixby Library and Jackman's Fuels, both on Main St. in Vergennes. Tickets ($1 each or $5 for a book of six) can also be purchased right up until the 7:00 pm drawing and winners need not be present to claim their prizes. SAL Squadron 14 has donated $2,000 per year to the Bixby Library for children's programs for each of the last ten years and helped support the participation of 680 area children in library programs last year. Legion Post 14 will use profits from the party itself to help fund its many charitable and community service efforts in the community.
Shrimp cocktail and prime rib are on the menu for New Year's Eve Friday, Dec. 31. The 7:30 dinner precedes an evening of dancing to DJ music provided by Best Time Entertainment from 8:30 pm until 12:30 am. The general public is invited. At midnight there will be a champagne toast to ring in 2011. Tickets are $17.50 per person and can be purchased at the Post.
