Local nonprofits celebrate at awards ceremony

SCHROON LAKE - A growing philanthropic presence in the Gore Mountain region, the Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region, honored local nonprofit organizations to the 2010 grant award ceremony Aug. 20 at the Seagle Music Colony's Rehearsal Studio.

Since 2006, a group of local residents have worked to grow CFGMR, an endowment fund, ensuring the Gore Mountain region has permanent charitable resources that will always be available to meet pressing needs and improve the quality of life of the regional communities.

The endowment's income from CFGMR is distributed in the form of annual grants in various areas. The amount of grant funding available is determined by the income generated by CFGMR's principal.

CFGMR's principal has grown with the generous donations of local and seasonal residents and community minded employers including The Barton Group. As the fund continues to grow, the size and number of grants will increase.

The 2010 CFGMR grant recipients include:

• The Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home for entryway garden plantings

• Essex County Toys for Kids for holidays toys for underprivileged children in Schroon and Minerva

• Johnsburg Historical Society for archival storage materials to preserve local historical artifacts

• Johnsburg Youth Commission for first aid kits and personal flotation devices for the TREKS program

• Minerva Fire and Rescue Squad funds towards a sign for their building

• Minerva Historical Society funds towards a scanner and computer

• Planet Minerva for community garden first aid kit, composter and educational materials

• Minerva Central School for funding assistance for the Middle School student's trip to Manhattan next spring

• North Creek Ministry for purchase of and instruction in the use of car seats and adding to a baby's emergency fund

• North Country Outreach Center (garden program) seed starts, fertilizer and tools; (GED program) preparation materials; and (food pantry) funds to expand food items available to those in need
