Chamber talks move forward

CROWN POINT - Plans for the creation of a Crown Point Chamber of Commerce are moving forward.

A group of 16 people recently gathered for a pot luck dinner meeting at the Stoney Lonesome Bed and Breakfast to discuss the possible future formation and feasibility of a Crown Point chamber.

"Enthusiasm was high as some people met for the first time and testified to others who weren't able to make it, but are very interested in being kept abreast of developments and future meeting dates," said Nancy Ockrin, a leader in the movement.

Attending the meeting were Crown Point Supervisor Bethany Kosmider, Joe and Cindy Bodette of Frenchman's Restaurant, Bonnie Sprinkle of Achieve Fitness, Glen Buell of the Salvation Army, Paul Burns of Modex Consulting, Sonny and Sue Harper of Harper's Outdoor Wood Furnaces, Gary and Karyn Varmette of D & G Canopy Rental, Don and Joan Miller of Miller's Antiques, John and Sharon Hieber, and the hosts, John and Nancy Ockrin of Stoney Lonesome Bed and Breakfast.

"The participants took turns introducing themselves and their businesses, sharing what they hoped to gain or see in a chamber, as well as what they might be able to bring to the table," Nancy Ockrin said. "We need to know each other, so we, in turn, can help our community be known."

Joe Bodette said he looks forward to not hearing about any more businesses closing their doors, but rather to new businesses realizing that Crown Point, especially a Crown Point with an established chamber in place, could indeed be a great place to begin a business adventure.

Cindy Bodette suggested a local chamber can create a Crown Point map with all the area businesses in it.

Buell said a chamber could help the community grasp that there is a year-round Salvation Army post in Crown Point, not just during the holidays. Joan Miller, a past Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce president, warned those gathered about the amount of time and work needed for such an undertaking.
