TICONDEROGA - A Cohoes man died while swimming at in the town of Ticonderoga Aug. 1.
The body of Jacob A. Smith, 32, of New Louden Road, Cohoes, was recovered at 5:05 p.m. Sunday in 28 feet of water, according to police.
The incident occurred in a rock quarry adjacent to Rock Pond in the Pharaoh Lake wilderness area. Rock Pond is accessible by a half-mile-long hiking trail from the Putts Pond Campsite in Ticonderoga.
Smith, who was camping at Rock Pond with three friends, jumped into the quarry about 2:15 p.m., police said.
Smith's friends observed the victim jump from a ledge about 60 feet high and then float face-down before going under water, police said. His friends jumped into the quarry but were unsuccessful in locating Smith, police said.
The Ticonderoga Police Department was assisted in the investigation by state police, state forest rangers and the Essex County Office of Emergency Services. The state police aviation unit from Albany assisted with a helicopter during the recovery effort because of the remoteness of the site.
