NORTH CREEK - The 53rd annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby will kick off in North Creek on April 30 and will be highlighted this year by the 1st annual Adirondack Adventure Festival, sponsored by the Gore Mountain Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Under new direction by Katie Nightingale, the Whitewater Derby committee is looking forward to continuing its tradition of famed whitewater races and partnering with the Adirondack Adventure Festival.
"We felt that the Adirondack Adventure Festival would fit well with the established success of the Whitewater Derby," said Gore Mountain Chamber president, Dave Bulmer. "We wanted to provide a weekend of outdoor fun, entertainment, and family adventures in addition to the races."
In celebration of a new season of activities and outdoor adventures available throughout the Gore Mountain region, the festival will feature a sampling of these activities.
"Many people visit the area for the skiing, but never realize all the other activities that are available," said Bulmer.
The Adirondack Adventure Festival is a participatory event that hopes to give credit to the variation of activities available in the region. Featured events include, guided bike tours over mile of terrain stretching from Riparius to Schroon Lake. Also offered, will be canoe and kayak demos, guided hikes, GPS instruction, fly fishing demos and clinics, helicopter rides, vendors and much more.
The planning committee admits that this event would not have been possible without community support.
"Many local organizations are participating in this event to help make the first year a great start to this annual festival," said Bulmer.
Aside from local organizations, Warren County Tourism has helped to sponsor the event by providing funding from occupancy taxes to help promote and run the festival.
