Fair to raise awareness this Sunday

PLATTSBURGH - Every person can play a part in making the planet a better place.

That's the point the Champlain Valley Family Center's Learn and Serve America Program and the League of Women Voters of the Plattsburgh Area will make as they host their annual Environmental/Global Awareness Fair this Sunday, April 25, at Champlain Centre, 60 Smithfield Blvd.

Learn and Serve coordinator Karen McCarthy said this year's event appears to have more people set to participate than in previous years. Participants will consist of Plattsburgh City School District and Saranac Middle School students, Girl Scouts and other concerned citizens and local organizations teaching the public ways to protect the planet. Currently, 25 booths are planned to display information about environmental and global issues.

"We'll have information about issues like recycling, the environment and other topics like hunger and obesity that are considered global issues," explained McCarthy. "[The students] have been studying what we can do to help the planet and they're going to show people in our community what they should know."

"They're really hoping people will stop, pay attention and maybe learn something," she added.

Barbara Landes, chairwoman of the league's environmental committee, said she's looking forward to the event, which furthers efforts to educate youths and the community in general about global issues.

"We want the next generation interested in things like recycling. We want them to be aware of their impact," said Landes. "And, it's a boost for to them to see the community take interest. That's why we do this. We want to educate the community."

This Sunday's event will be held from 12-2 p.m. Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey and Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett will be among speakers who will kick-off the event at noon in the interior courtyard in front of Gander Mountain.

For more information about the fair or for those interested in participating, contact McCarthy by phone at 562-9009 or e-mail at lsa@cvfamilycenter.org.
