Hong Kong-born musician to perform

Musician and author Mingmei Yip will perform traditional Chinese music on the qin, a seven-stringed zither, and give a brief explanatory lecture, Friday, April 23, 4 p.m., at the Ilsley Public Library Community Meeting Room.

Yip received her doctorate degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Paris, Sorbonne. She was appointed lecturer in music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and later senior lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Yip grew up in Hong Kong and from a young age has had a consuming interest in the traditional arts of China. In addition to being an accomplished qin musician, Yip is the author of eight books in English and Chinese, including Peach Blossom Pavilion, the story of the last Chinese courtesan (or Geisha) and "Petals from the Sky", a Buddhist love story.
