MINERVA- The Lady Mountaineers only lost one senior to graduation last year - Chelsea Walsh at third base and will rely on returning players to excel at their positions.
"We bring a lot of experience," said coach Bruce McGinn. "We are certainly stronger position-wise than we were last year."
McGinn has been coaching softball for the past seven years. Last year the team went 2-8.
The Mountaineers return four-year-starter Larissa Roy at shortstop and as their number three hitter. Junior Laura Tokarz will lead the team from the mound and also bring solid hitting experience. Sophomore Marlena Peter brings tons of natural talent to the infield at second base.
"She will be a driving force for the whole team," McGinn said of Peter.
McGinn also expects a lot out of sophomores Renna Yandon at first base and Tara Galusha switching off between catcher and outfield.
Completing the infield will be seniors Emma Parsonson and Shelby Poulton, and sophomores Caelan Gould and Amanda Bellotti. The outfield will be led by senior Hillary Bureau, joined by juniors Shiori Takagi, Jae Lee, Anni Kostiainen, Charly Egli and Bridget Stith, and sophomore KayLeigh Soentik.
The starting line-up for the Mountaineers boasts a lot of young players including six underclassmen with only three seniors.
"Our youth may hold us back in the beginning," said McGinn. "We should, however, have our game together by sectionals."
McGinn believes his team will be in contention with Johnsburg for the division title and will look to be successful in sectionals.
