JOHNSBURG - Head coach Phil Goodman pulled up seven new players to the Lady Jaguars this year and will deal with the absence of several 2009 graduates.
Goodman has been coaching the Lady Jaguars for 14 years and went 2-8 with the team last year.
Allison Ordway at first base and Samantha Shook at third base left significant gaps in the Jaguar roster, according to Goodman. He sees junior Nicole Wardwell and sophomore Sierra Galusha stepping up to fill those spots.
Senior Kelly Blackhurst will lead the team from behind the plate, while seniors Brittney Allard and Margaret Welz will be strong from the mound and in the outfield. Junior Cortina Greene will help with the pitching efforts and junior Cassandra Prouty will start at shortstop.
Goodman acknowledged the potential of his younger players as well as the experience of his starters.
"Once our seven new players get acclimated to the varsity level, we will improve," he said. "When we get it all together we are going to be competitive."
He hopes to capitalize on the team's strong defense and speed in order to challenge the league leaders.
Senior Chelsea Bromley will lead the outfield, while juniors Skye Allard and Kelly Brown will join her. Sophomores Kayla Tyrel and Emily Walter will also play in the outfield.
Junior Cassie Cleveland will back up Blackhurst behind the plate and sophomores Rachael Dunkley and Meghan Sponable will rotate between infield and outfield.
Goodman acknowledged that Indian Lake/Long Lake will be the team to beat in the division with strong pitching and an overall athletic team. Minerva\Newcomb always improves during the season, he said.
"Once we get our positioning figured out and get a few games under our belt, we will be competitive," said Goodman.
