My journey to the half-marathon

By Martha Breyette

I had a big week this past week - turning 40! My husband, daughter and family threw me a little get together where I could visit with my friends and family. Everyone was so supportive and encouraging about how good I looked and how proud they were of me. It was so rewarding for me to know I have stuck to my goal since January and haven't given up yet.

I did splurge a little and had some birthday cake my sister-in-law, Marguerite, made for me! I just promised myself I would work out enough to burn those extra calories off. I have come to learn it is about calories in vs. calories out!

Over the weekend I ran 12.4 miles! I am so close to finishing the race - for the first time I feel like it is truly possible. I did learn a few things on this run. First, it was hotter than it had been and I didn't drink enough water. So don't ever underestimate the value of hydration. Secondly, my sneakers gave me a really bad blister so I have resolved that issue. I think it is a live and learn as you go but I am hoping for a good result on the 18th.

This week I have felt a little under the weather but have tried to maintain my exercise. I tried Zumba and absolutely loved it! What a workout! My daughter Abby wants to try this with me as she loves to dance.
