T1 school promotes wellness

The Dan Padula Memorial Fund awards two scholarships each year to high school athletes interested in health sciences, a nursing scholarship at North Country Community College and a nursing scholarship at Clinton Community College, Padula's alma mater.

The fund also sponsors health-related programs in the community, addressing issues such as smoking cessation, heart disease, childhood obesity and more.

Padula was a physicians assistant in Ticonderoga. He died in 2000.

"I met this summer with Rob Berrick(president of the Padula Fund) about the possibility of the Dan Padula Memorial Fund helping us get speakers for these topics and this is who he found," McDonald said. "We really appreciate his efforts and the help of the fund which allowed us to provide an outstanding program."

Ticonderoga will also institute a new program this fall in the elementary school, giving students fresh fruits and vegetables each day.

"As part of our wellness efforts, we wrote and received a Fresh Fruits and Vegetables grant where all students in grades K-6 will receive fresh fruits and vegetables everyday as a snack," McDonald noted.
