Lake George was thrown into a state of great excitement when Thomas Lanfear, 22, the young man who was committed to the County Jail for obtaining an overcoat from Erlanger's Dept. Store, Glens Falls, under false pretenses, made his escape from the jail.
Jailer Brown went into the jail shortly after 6 o'clock to feed the prisoners and in doing so left the door to Lanfear's cell enclosure open and Lanfear, seeing his opportunity, made a wild dash for liberty. An alarm was immediately sounded and soon the posse was in wild pursuit.
Ralph Brown, son of the jailer and Oliver Moore, a Hudson Valley Trolley conductor, eventually captured him on a trolley car which, coming back from Warrensburgh, passed the Plank Road crossing where the fugitive attempted to embark and ride out of town in comfort. Lanfear was taken back to his jail cell.
