Power outage possible for MLD customers

PLATTSBURGH - In a press release issued by Plattsburgh City Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak, the mayor state the electrical grid that serves the North Country experienced an interruption in service on one transmission line Nov. 13. A local energy generating facility experienced an unexpected shutdown and was expected to remain off-line until late Monday. There is some uncertainty as to the source of replacement power through Monday evening. One replacement source may be electrical power generated from local wind turbines. The remaining power lines are currently operating at close to their capacity.

If the power capacity is affected there is a possibility the city and outlying areas could experience power blackouts.

Municipal Lighting department manager Bill Treacy and city line workers are prepared to address any power issues the city will face.

Temperatures are moderate for this time of year which could benefit the local power usage; however, the possibility of temporary power shutoffs does exist, the mayor noted.

"We would appreciate the residents of the city of Plattsburgh to make every effort to conserve electricity by keeping thermostats at a comfortable level and minimize your electric usage through Monday," Kasprzak stated in the press release.

Power utilized in the city of Plattsburgh is provided from several sources, which include local large and small power generation, a line to and from Vermont which was recently scheduled for routine maintenance, and a power feed through NYSEG and National Grid electric power lines.
