Mayor outlines several items in the works

The month of October has come and gone and now the winter months will be upon us soon. With this change brings a host of issues the city must deal with. Picking up leaves, ordering salt and sand for snow storms, and getting our winter equipment ready are just a few of those issues.

I attended several events throughout the month. The opening of the Welcome Center for CV Tech Literacy on the U.S. Oval was well attended. This new center will be helpful in assisting individuals in many ways which is a much needed addition to the community. The annual Domestic Violence Event was held at CVPH. Each year, awareness of this issue increases and the people involved with providing services to individuals affected with domestic violence are very special indeed.

I had the pleasure of hosting 20 German students in city hall as part of an exchange program with Plattsburgh High School. The students asked me excellent questions. I was very impressed with their knowledge of our political issues. I had the pleasure to speak at the Realtors Breakfast updating everyone on development projects throughout the city. The Plattsburgh College Suites project on the old St. John's property is almost completely finished. The Catherine Gardens project on the Seton Catholic property is about to commence and Walgreens is to open very soon.

The City of Plattsburgh received a $4.7 million grant and loan from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation to assist us with the closing of the Akey Landfill Project. Without this funding, our taxpayers would have seen a tremendous long term debt load for 20-30 years. I am truly grateful for the assistance of Gov. Paterson, EFC president Matt Millea, and DEC officials.

We held eight interviews for the Deputy Chamberlain position. Each individual interviewed was extremely qualified. We hope to make a decision very soon.
