Smith named student of the month

CHESTERTOWN - North Warren High School recently selected Craig Smith as the Adirondack Journal Student of the Month.

He was selected by the faculty and staff as one who desires to make a positive impact in his world, North Warren Guidance Counselor Michael Therio said.

"As an outstanding role model, Craig is an exceptional reflection of the class of 2010," Therio said.

Craig is the son of Nancy and Steve Smith of Brant Lake.

As a junior at North Warren, Craig is involved in varsity baseball and golf, and has served as vice president of his class for three years. He has also served on Student Council, the Class of 2010 Prom Committee and the Audio-Visual club.

In his community, Craig is a volunteer firefighter as well as a volunteer at virtually every benefit golf tournament available, from the North Warren Teacher's Association tournament to the Helper's Fund event. He has also participated in both the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program, and has volunteered for the local Thanksgiving Community Dinner for three years. Craig is also active with the Warren County Youth Court, and is an after-school care volunteer for young children.

Though busy with many activities, Craig feels that firefighting is of primary importance, Therio said.

His motivation is his desire to be able to help people in any way that he can, the counselor said. Craig is an active participant in North Warren Students Against Destructive Decisions, and works with his mother, Class of 2010 advisor, to assist with class activities. Craig feels that it is important to be available to those who have a need, Therio said.

Last year, Craig represented North Warren High in golf sectionals.

As Craig takes golf very seriously, achieving sectionals was a highlight of his golf career. His goal is to make next year his best and to compete in the state championship tournament, Therio said. Craig has the desire to participate in every community golf tournament he can, because in doing so, he is able to combine his favorite sport with helping others, Therio said.
