Indian Lake/Long Lake unable to secure MVAC title

WILLSBORO - Schroon Lake senior Ethan Tyrrell led his team on both offense and defense, pitching a three-hit shutout in the Wildcats' 7-0 win over Indian Lake/Long Lake in the MVAC baseball championship May 22.

Tyrrell fanned 14 and walked just one in a full seven innings. He put two Orange players on base to start the game, but picked off both of them.

Tyrrell helped his cause from the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, and two stolen bases.

The Wildcats struck first in the second when Brennan Bush's two-out single to left brought Matt Savarie home. They would add four more runs in the third with no-out singles by Tyrrell, Lance Paradis, and Anthony Vanderwalker leading the charge.

"These guys got their noses back to the grindstone and got it done at the plate," said Schroon Lake head coach Mike Sharp. "We got some good play from the bottom of our lineup."

The Orange's Cody Cummins hit a long ball to center in the second that bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double in the second inning. He would be one of four runners left stranded by Indian Lake/Long Lake, however.

Kris Bain added a double to lead off the seventh before Tyrell struck out the final three batters.

"They're a good, quality ball club," said Sharp. "I just don't think they've seen anything like Ethan before."

Savarie and Wesley Beers each had two hits and an RBI for the Wildcats, who amassed six stolen bases. With the win, they climb to 13-0, the first undefeated baseball season for Schroon Lake since 1978.

Orange pitcher Jeff Reynolds struck out seven, walked two, and picked off one runner in five innings for the loss.
