Garden Club plants tree in Shepard Park

LAKE GEORGE - On May 20, Lake George Community Garden Club members met with Lake George Village Mayor Robert Blais to recognize the club's donation of a tree near the playground and boardwalk area in Shepard Park.

Blais expressed appreciation for the group's action, noting their continuing beautification efforts in the village.

The garden club has planted trees in town in the past, last year planting a similar species in the same vicinity.

The tree species, Pink Spires Crabapple, is hardy and native to the region, and it blooms in early May.

The tree blooms pink, but features red-purple foliage that turns to green-bronze in summer, and copper in Fall.

The tree planting is in part to acknowledge both National Arbor Day on April 24 and National Garden Week, June 7-13. The local Garden Club's donation reflects the current sentiment of the National Garden Clubs to plant native species, Club officials said.
