Padula was a physicians assistant in Ticonderoga and an avid golfer. He was playing golf when fatally stricken July 10, 2000.
"July 10, 2009, marks the ninth anniversary of the passing of our friend and colleague Daniel Leonard Padula," said Rob Berrick, president of the Dan Padula Memorial Fund. "Those who knew him remember his bubbly personality, his high-pitched, boisterous laugh and his unending compassion.
"In 2002 a group of his friends and colleagues started the Dan Padula Memorial Fund in order to carry on what we felt, if not for that fateful day in July, was Dan's legacy of giving of himself," he continued. "Since then we have given back to the community in many ways."
The Dan Padula Memorial Fund awards two scholarships each year to high school athletes interested in health sciences, a nursing scholarship at North Country Community College and a nursing scholarship at Clinton Community College, Padula's alma mater.
The fund also sponsors health-related programs in the community, addressing issues such as smoking cessation, heart disease, childhood obesity and more. It has also sponsored programs for Ti school students and faculty.
"All of these are free of charge," Berrick said. "We have donated funds to community organizations to improve handicap access and to improve equipment for youth sporting programs, and we have quietly given to families that have suffered from catastrophic medical conditions to help defray those mounting costs."
The Dan Padula Memorial Golf Classic is the fund's only fund-raising event each year.
