Designing students show off their creations

WILLSBORO - Sophomores and juniors from Willsboro Central School recently got a chance to show off the results of their first encounter with fashion design.

A May 14 exhibition at the Willsboro Visitor's Center featured three unique pieces of apparel designed and created by 14 Willsboro students, the culmination of a seven-week project led by local artist Erin Hall.

Through a grant by the Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks, Hall worked with students in Rebecca Holzhauer's Art class at Willsboro, teaching them about the history and application of textiles.

As the culmination of their studies, students designed and produced an actual outfit by dying raw muslin fabric and arranging it to fit a mannequin.

"Each student started with a concept or idea that they would create," explained Hall, "and finished with a final product."

"The kids have really reacted to it," said Holzhauer. "Both the boys and the girls have been really excited."

The project was the first time the students had a chance to work with textiles.

"It's like nothing we've ever done before," said Tara Robare. "We've never done anything with fashion, so it was just amazing to do something different."
