Nancy Decker writes that the new Visitors Center at the Heritage House will be opening soon, after the hard work of many dedicated volunteers. They'd hoped to have it open for Memorial Day weekend, but it's not quite there yet. But there will a cookies-and-punch open house reception at the Heritage House on Monday, May 25, after the 9 a.m. Memorial Day service on the Library Lawn.
Guests will be able to view several temporary interpretive exhibits on local history, geography, and sites of interest, thanks to the generous and energetic assistance of Mrs. Mathews and Mr. Thompson of Westport Central School, along with their talented students.
Meanwhile, the Visitors Center is still looking for volunteers, who will be called "Westport's Ambassadors," to staff the facility over the summer. If you have a little extra time this summer, this would a wonderful way to meet people and introduce them to the community and its many possibilities for shopping, dining, sightseeing, and recreation.
Ambassadors have a choice of two possible times for a brief training session. This will be a "get acquainted with the building" sort of thing: locks, windows, light switches, etc. The morning option is Monday, June 8, 11-noon, and the evening option is Wednesday, June 10, 6-7 p.m. Call Judy Bertsche at 962-8670 if you're interested, or just go ahead and come to one of the sessions.
And don't forget the Depot Theatre Rummage Sale runs all Memorial Day weekend, starting Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday is Bag Day-fill a bag for only $10. There's lots of cool stuff there.
At the Depot next weekend, on Saturday, May 30, the Champlain Valley Film Society continues its triumphant spring run in Westport with "Annie Hall," the hilarious and moving 1977 masterpiece that many critics hail as the high-point of Woody Allen's career. It won 4 Oscars, including best picture, best director (Allen), best actress (wiggy, lovable Diane Keaton in the title role), and best screenplay. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets $5 adult / $2 under 18.
