Lake George advances to league showdown after victory over Burghers

WARRENSBURG - Two experienced Lake George pitchers collaborated to shut down Warrensburg in a 13-1 no-hitter Monday, as the 2009 regular season advanced toward a conclusion.

The win was enroute to the Warriors' highly anticipated showdown against Hartford for the league championship Friday at Moreau Recreation Field. Hartford beat Fort Ann 2-1 Monday to take the eastern division title, as Lake George, with a 12-1 league record, had already wrapped up the Western Division.

In the Monday game, standout Lake George pitcher Katelyn Callahan pitched four innings, and struck out eight Burgher batters. Bri Trombley struck out four over the final three stanzas.

Warrior junior Sara Anderson hit two doubles and three RBIs, and and senior teammate Shelby Jenkins hit a triple. Both players scored twice, and junior Taylor Dawson scored three times. Junior Chelsea Scott was 2-for-3 in the effort.

Warrensburg's score came after senior Carol White reached base in the 7th inning on a rare Warrior error, and moved to second on a walk, advanced to third on a Mercedes Maltbie hit to the pitcher, and scored on Holly Gheen's hit to second base.

After the game, Warrior Coach Kelly Collins praised Warrensburg's softball program.

"We always look forward to playing in Warrensburg," she said. "They've always got strong teams that give us great competition, and an outstanding coach in Mary ann Bump."

Bump said she was disappointed with the Burger batting, but was pleased with her team's ability to field the ball and contain Lake George's potent offense.

"My players made some nice defensive plays," she said.

Before Lake George faces Hartford - which earlier this season handed them their only loss of the year - the Warriors were scheduled to take on Hadley-Luzerne Wednesday.

Collins said she's seen solid improvement in her team, and that Callahan is continuing to sharpen her skills, teaming up with a new catcher, sophomore Nicole Bureau.
