Warriors streaking toward season's goals

WARRENSBURG - With blistering hot offense, the Lake George Warrior team has considerable momentum toward its goal of winning the Adirondack League.

As of Monday night, the team had a season tally of 8-0 in the Adirondack League and 9-4 overall - after beating the talented Hadley-Luzerne squad 7-6.

There's no doubt the Warrior bats have been connecting this year.

Starting catcher senior Jake Nelson, awarded all-conference status last year, has picked up this year where he left off in 2008, new baseball coach Erik Hoover said Tuesday.

As of Monday, Nelson was leading the team in home runs with seven this year, and has logged 18 RBIs so far.

That's not all, Hoover said. Nelson's powerful hitting is reflected in his slugging percentage of .927, which attests to his ability to connect for extra-base hits.

Hoover said that one of the unexpected highlights of the season has been the emergence of sophomore Jack Clark as an offensive power. Beginning the season on the bench, he moved into a slot in right field, and since has proven his talent, Hoover said.

Clark is now leading the team with a hot .472 batting avenge, the coach said.

"Jack has certainly earned his starting role," Hoover said, noting how others, including Ryan Lynch and Toby Noble, have also shown offensive power. Lynch is now batting .420.

Senior Peter Gaibrois, a team captain, is an ace in the Warrior pitching staff, Hoover said.

"Peter's pitching stats are just mind-boggling," he said.

In Gaibrois' four starts this year, he's only given up one earned run, and his ERA is a stingy 0.25, Hoover said.

"Peter can throw three pitches consecutively for strikes, so he keeps batters on their toes," Hoover said. "Opponents can't spot his curveballs, and they're unprepared for his changeups."

The team's ability was evident in its 27-0 domination of rival Warrensburg in a game played April 29.
