CHESTERTOWN - North Warren High School has named senior Melissa Cooper as the Rotary Student of the Month for February. She is the daughter of Stacy Cooper of Chestertown.
Melissa is among North Warren's top students academically, and she accomplishes many things behind the scenes, school counselor Mike Therio said.
"Melissa is an unassuming, sensitive young lady who is her own person," he said.
For four years, Melissa has been an active member of the high school field hockey team, and has competed on the tennis team for three years. She has participated in the Foreign Language Club, Peer Tutoring, and the school's Envirothon. Melissa has also participated in three of the school's musical shows, and was a featured dancer in this year's production of "Anything Goes."
From these experiences she has a desire to become a professional dancer, Therio said. During the last two summers, she has enjoyed serving as an assistant for the Chester-Horicon Summer Youth Program, he said.
Last year, the school hosted a student who didn't speak much English, and Melissa volunteered to work with the student in the classroom, he said.
Melissa is currently working after school helping to care for a young boy with disabilities, Therio said, noting her extracurricular accomplishments in Girl Scouts.
"Melissa is very generous with her time and she leads by example," he said. " Her friends and family would say that she is a great source of support and a wonderful friend."
In her junior year, Melissa was selected to be North Warren's Girl's State representative, and this year, she holds an office for the Class of 2009.
Melissa plans to attend Adirondack Community College in the Fall.
