Capt. Lea Coggio, a skipper of the lake Champlain Charlotte-to-Essex ferry, is related to Capt. Richard Phillips of Underhill, Vt. Phillips made international headline news as the captain and hero of the highjacked, foreign-owned freigther, M.V. Maersk Alabama. The ship was held for a week by Somali pirates. A U.S. Navy sniper team killed two of the three pirates holding Phillips hostage in a covered lifeboat.
According to Coggio, Phillips son, Daniel Phillips, was a crewmember of the Charlotte-to-Essex ferry during the summer of 2008. Coggio is Phillips sister-in-law.
