SARANAC LAKE - Dan Berggren and Roy Hurd will be performing in concert at BluSeed Studios on May 15 at 7:30 p.m. This benefit performance is in support of musician Dan Duggan while he undergoes treatment for cancer.
The concert will also include some local guest musicians: Joey Izzo, who took a top spot in the Saranac Lake's talent show for his piano playing and recently performed at the Saranac Lake's Winter Carnival Rotary Variety show; and the eclectic blend of Rustic Riders, featuring Lisa and Klaus Meissner. Those who attend may experience a few surprise appearances as well.
Dan Duggan, nationally touring performer and teacher, is one of the finest dulcimer players and composers in the country. As recipient of the prestigious National Hammered Dulcimer Championship, Dan's accomplishment, though based on technical merit, is even more considerable as he is the first winner to have performed all original compositions.
One of Dan's goals is to bring traditional music and instrumentation to audiences unfamiliar with this genre of music, and he is accomplishing this through his innovative blending of traditional instrumentation with inspired originality. At the time of this benefit concert for Duggan, he will be recovering from chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Dan Berggren has been collecting, writing and singing folk music of the Adirondacks since 1975. The award-winning educator and musician grew up in Essex County on the land farmed by his mother's family and worked in the woods on a forest ranger's crew and a survey crew. His latest CD "Fresh Territory" explores the lives of hard-working folks, taking care of our planet and each other. He often tours with Dan Duggan and Peggy Lynn as the group Jamcrackers and has been Duggan's friend and musical comrade for 31 years.
In the years he has been performing, Roy Hurd has played his brand of mountain music nationally and has developed a following unparalleled in the Adirondack Mountains. He has just released his new CD, "Chronicles From The Love Shack," which tells the stories of lovers and outlaws, of peaceful moments at home and in the natural world and of life on the open road.
