WARRENSBURG - The Burgher baseball players are apparently continuing a winning momentum they began midway in the 2008 season.
The Warrensburg High School baseball team has tallied a 4-1 league record in the first two weeks of their 2009 season - and they won a crucial divisional game Monday against Hadley-Luzerne.
Although some sports fans had been concerned the team's offense would be lacking after the 2008 graduation of a group of powerful hitters, the 2009 squad has dished up a flurry of hits and runs so far.
In Monday's 9-5 victory over the Eagles, Burgher lead-off hitter Kory Russell blasted a double to start the game off, and his teammates caught the fever.
Winning Pitcher Brendan Frye, a left-hander, made waves on both offense and defense.
He not only kept his opponents off-balance with his varied pitches, he accomplished two hits in his four times at bat.
Russell hit two RBIs and scored a trio of runs in the effort, and Mike Curtis also fared well, scoring with that same numeral that spelled a "magic Monday" for the Burghers: he slammed three hits in three attempts, plus he connected for a three-run homer.
Luzerne bats weren't silent. They tallied six hits off Frye alongside six walks, but they were scattered amongst the innings, to retain the win for the Burghers.
Although Monday's game was a crowd-pleaser, the highlight of the season so far might be the Burghers' come-from-behind 8-5 victory April 23 against Fort Ann.
Perennially a league contender, Fort Ann was Class D Section II Champion last year.
"This was a huge win," Coach Rex Reynolds said Tuesday. "It proves we can compete with the best when we play good baseball."
Reynolds said he was impressed how pitcher Josh Baird was able to pitch a strong game although 24 hours earlier, he pitched a game against North Warren.
