Snowmobile enthusiasts look forward to winter

TICONDEROGA - It's spring, when young men's thoughts turn to....the next snowmobile season?

That's true for members of the Adirondack Trailriders, the Ticonderoga-based snowmobile club that's working to establish a corridor through the hamlet.

Trustee Steve Whitford told the Ti town board April 9 the club and town officials are close to finalizing a route along Lake George Avenue for snowmobilers wishing to pass through the hamlet.

"The plan has been approved by the police and highway departments," Whitford said. "One resident in the area has complained; we hope to have that issue resolved to have the corridor up and running next winter."

Whitford praised Pat Hendrix of the Adirondack Trailriders for his work on the project and the club's efforts to increase recreational opportunities in the community.

The Adirondack Trail Riders maintain 35 miles of state-designated trails in the Ticonderoga area that link the community to Lake Champlain, Schroon Lake, Crown Point and Moriah. Grooming those trails takes about 16 hours a week, depending on weather conditions.

The club, and its 125 members, is still hoping to expand the local trail system.

Respect, responsibility and safety are key elements of the Adirondack Trail Riders, president Tracy Smith said.

"The club's mission is to promote safe and responsible riding," he said. "We hope to get as many members as possible. We're also always looking for volunteers to help out."

Membership information is available on the club website, www.adirondacktrailriders.com.

Also on the website is information on upcoming events, trail maps and state registration vouchers.

Snowmobilers can now get state registration vouchers from the club website, www.adirondacktrailriders. com, or by calling Karla Vigliotti at 585-7110. The vouchers allow for a reduced rate registration.

The Adirondack Trail Riders meet the second Wednesday of each month, year-round, at 7 p.m. at the Ticonderoga Fish & Game Club. Interested people are welcome to attend.
