Spanish, art classes collaborate

TICONDEROGA - The Ticonderoga High School painting and drawing class and the SUNY-Albany Spanish 4 class combined forces for a "mock" art gallery opening recently.

Art teacher Britney McCarthy and Spanish teacher Lynne Lenhart provided refreshments for the "gallery opening," while students evaluated and discussed the great masters of Spanish painting and architecture.

Art students Dave Mallon, Allison Major, Chuck Swinton, Megan McDonough, Kylie O'Connor, Kylie Stice, Anthony Barnaby, Josh Cook, Chris Bennett, Sara Mallette, Danielle McLaughlin and Kenny Johnston participated in the event, with SUNY 4 Spanish students Hayley Best, John Molina, Chelsea Budwick, Alex Yaw, Alex LaFrance, Jaime Patchett and Kaitlyn Johnson.

The interdisciplinary event involved analysis of the painting techniques and artistic movements of Pablo Picasso, Joan Mir , Francisco Jos de Goya, Dom nico Theotocopoulos (el Greco), Diego Velazquez and Salvador Dal .

Students examined overhead slides and prints of the great works. Technique and symbolism were discussed as well.

The combined group also watched a video of the Ticonderoga High Spanish tour from 2006 in the city of Barcelona, Spain. The students in the video visited two sites with works from the artist and architect Antoni Gaud . Shown during the 2006 tour was the Sagrada Familia, a modernist cathedral that has been under construction for almost 100 years. They also viewed a walking tour of Parque Guell, a park on a hill above Barcelona, designed by Gaud with modernist sculptures, buildings and installations.
