SCHROON LAKE - The calendar says it's spring, but the local Lions Club won't say good bye to winter until the ice is out of Schroon Lake.
When will that be?
That's the point of the annual Lions "ice out" contest. The event allows people to guess the date and time with the winner getting a cash prize.
A wireless device has been placed on Schroon Lake by Lions. When it drops through the ice it will record the exact date and time, reporting it to Lions.
Tickets, $1 each, for the "ice out" contest are now on sale at the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, Flanagan's Pub, Friedman's Realty, Morse Construction and from Lions members. Tickets will also be on sale March 28 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grand Union in Schroon Lake. Ticket sales will end March 31.
The person who is closest to the exact time will receive 30 percent of the tickets sales. The second place ticket holder will get 15 percent and third place 5 percent.
In 2008 the Lions "ice out" device feel into the lake at 4:09 p.m. April 19. In 2007 it was 12:50 p.m. on April 24.
Proceeds from the "ice out" contest will support Lions projects in the Schroon Lake community. The Lions help provide eyeglasses, hearing aids and lifelines; offer college and camp scholarships; provide transportation for cancer patients for treatments; provide holiday food baskets and emergency funds to the needy; support local troops in Iraq and Afghanistan; and donate funds to local events such as the Fourth of July parade and library reading program.
The Town of Schroon Lions Club meets the third Monday of each month at Decesare's Pizza at 6:30 p.m. The meetings are open to the public. Anyone planning to attend for dinner should call 532-7577.
