Port Henry elects a new mayor

PORT HENRY - Port Henry will have a new mayor.

Incumbent Mayor Gary Cooke lost challenger Ernest Guerin, 124 to 62, in village voting March 18.

Guerin ran for office claiming he wants to return Port Henry to the way it was in the past, although he promised to keep an open mind on possible dissolution of the village.

A petition drive to dissolve the village failed two years ago, but the village is commissioning a feasibility study on the issue by the Technical Assistance Center at Plattsburgh State.

In the village board race, incumbent James Hughes and newcomer John "Jack" Sheldon ran unopposed.

Hughes received 135 votes and Sheldon, 129. William Ball received three votes as a write-in candidate.
