CSJ athletes, teams earn national kudos

Castleton State College athlete Matt Eisenhuth of South Newfane has been named the North Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week. Eisenhuth has led the Spartan offense through seven games this season, batting .556 (10-for-18) including two doubles, two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.

He has an on base percentage of .579 and has slugged .667 in six starts thus far.

C.J. Sullivan of Rutland has been named the North Atlantic ConferenceNorth Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. Sullivan was dominant in his first collegiate tennis match, earning a straight-set win in #2 singles 6-0, 6-3.

Sullivan also teamed with Jessee Maranda for an 8-0 shut-out in no. 3 doubles.

The Castleton State College field Hockey team was recently honored as a Castleton Field Hockeyrecipient of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Award.

Castleton was one of 97 teams to earn distinction from the NFHCA for having a team grade point average better than 3.0.

In addition to the team honor, Castleton also had seven individuals honored by the NFHCA to the National Academic Squad. Heather Brock, Molly Fraher, Samantha Funk, Angelica Mazzola, Courtney Nolan, Jessica Scott and Tricia Watson were all honored for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year.

Castleton's 2008 season was an historic one that saw the Spartans win the North Atlantic Conference Championship and make their first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Justin Garritt of Swan Lake, N.Y., of the Castleton State College men's ski Justin Garrittteam earned USCSA Academic All-American honors this past week at the USCSA National Championships at Winter Park, CO for his prowess on the slopes and in the classroom.

On the slopes, Garritt finished tenth overall in the ECSC Thompson Division individual standings. Garritt's top performance of the year came in the slalom event at Killington on January 10 when he finished third out of 117 racers. Towards the end of the season, Garritt came close to matching his season-best result, as he placed fourth out of 101 competitors at the ECSC Thompson Division Finals giant slalom. In the classroom, Garritt has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.81 and had been named to the Dean's List every semester at Castleton.
