WARRENSBURG - A variety of achievements, both on the hardwood and wrestling mats, were recognized Thursday at the Warrensburg High School Winter Sports Banquet.
Whether a team struggled to have a break-even record or an athlete set new records during the season, students gained valuable character-building experience, Principal Doug Duell said.
"Hard work is not always enjoyable - and the athletes we honor here tonight have paid their dues," he said. "What you have learned as athletes will stay with you for a lifetime."
Wrestling Coach Mark Trapasso said his 2008-09 team was a "tough group" that had proven themselves.
"Most Outstanding Wrestler" award on Varsity went to Logan Rock, who was the the overall Section II champion for the 215-pound weight class. Rock is the fifth Sectional champion ever for the school. He also competed in the State championship tourney, in which he placed last year. Rock graduates this year after tallying over 100 wins.
Most Improved went to Colin Campbell, who in his first year in the sport fought his way to the runner-up heavyweight title in the Section II Class D championships and fourth in the Sectionals overall, a remarkable achievement for someone in their first year competing, Trapasso said.
The Wrestling Sportsmanship Award went to Senior Noah Davis for his hard work, and a Coaches' Award went to backup wrestler Cole Mosher for grappling with Rock and Campbell in practice, helping them become better, Trapasso said.
The coach also praised Donovan Santisteban, Cole Tennant, Abby Roth, Jon Vaisey Logan Winter and Charlie Giknis for their achievements and season records.
For Modified wrestling, the Sportsmanship trophy went to Will Yarmowich and Most Improved to Beecher Baker.
For Varsity Boys Basketball, Coach Rich Schloss said the team's 8-14 record hid the team's substantial accomplishments, which included defeating Adirondack League Champion Fort Ann. Also, he said, the team advanced to the Sectional semifinals, the first time a Warrensburg basketball team has done so in 11 years.
