I've been thinking about these netbooks and I think they would be perfect
for both our reps and our reporters. The issue isn't the upfront cost ($99
through Verizon, $250 or so per unit through ebay). The issue is the
ongoing cost of mobile broadband. Through Verizon, mobile broadband would
cost us $60 per person per month. For my eight coverage areas (16 people -
ad and editorial, 16 netbooks) we're talking about $11,500 per year for
mobile web access - plus about $1600 in startup costs to get the machines.
With taxes and additional fees, we're probably talking well over $25,000
over the term of the contract in Syracuse alone. Through the three
markets, we're probably talking close to $100K.
If that's the direction we want to go, we should investigate the upfront
costs of the computers and determine the pluses and minuses of using
mobile broadband or simply using the wireless cards that are already
installed in most of these machines. In two years, I wonder whether areas
like Syracuse and Albany in particular (probably not the North Country)
will have wireless hotspots on nearly every street corner.
Definitely an idea we should pursue further. It's hard to create the
immediacy we need on the web if we have our reporters driving a half hour
(or much further in your case) back to the office to post a brief on the
web.
