Vergennes American Legion Post 14 has selected Scott Gaines of Vergennes to receive the 2009 Community Service Award. This award annually recognizes a non-Legion member of the Vergennes area for exceptional contributions to the community. The award will be presented March 12.

The 46-year-old graduate of Vergennes Union High School and Champlain College is a co-owner/co-principal, along with his brother, of Gaines Insurance Agency in Vergennes. A self-described "doer, not a title guy," Gaines was selected by a Legion committee from a field of several outstanding candidates, primarily due to the breadth of the community activities in which he has been involved, with tangible results, over a number of years.

"I like to do stuff; I like to get things done," said Gaines in describing his primary motivation for his roles in various activities:

Books for Bikes. This program provides positive motivation and reinforcement to encourage children's' literacy and a love of reading. Gaines created Books for Bikes in Vergennes, underwrites it and runs it in coordination with Bixby Library Librarian Rachel Plante.

The Rubber Duckie Race held annually on Vergennes Day. The proceeds of this effort support many people in the community. The Annual Henry Leach Golf Outing at Cedar Knolls Country Club. Scott chaired the tournament, the proceeds of which benefit the Green Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts, for a number of years and now serves as a consultant to the tournament.
