Candidates to vie for village justice seat this Wednesday

DANNEMORA - On Election Day, the village of Dannemora will see two candidates vying for the seat of village justice.

Kristine Bowman and Daniel Lucia are each running for their first four-year term of a position being vacated by retiring longtime justice Ruth M. Snyder.

Upon learning Snyder was retiring this year, Bowman said she decided to run because she has "both the experience and background to fulfill the duties." Bowman, who serves the town of Dannemora as secretary to the supervisor and budget officer, has 17 years of experience in accounting and bookkeeping and previously held the position of town court clerk from 2003-2008.

"I will bring my current court knowledge and experience to the bench," said Bowman. "As village justice, I would serve with integrity, common sense and fairness."

The village, she said, is facing an increase in youth violations, and it is her intention to continue to handle such cases accordingly, working with necessary outside agencies.

Lucia also said he decided to run after hearing of Snyder's retirement, crediting her with being a "fair and consistent" judge. If elected, he said he intends to do the job at the same level as his predecessor.

"I think I can continue to bring fairness and consistency to the plate, and honesty," he said.

That would involve "looking at both sides of every story" and making determinations based on weighing all the evidence, Lucia said.

"It's a big responsibility, I realize that," he said.

The position is one Lucia believes he would continue with for as many years as the people would have him, he said.

"If I'm elected and I consider myself doing a well job, I'll probably continue on," he said.

Now retired, Lucia was previously employed as a correction officer with the New York State Department of Correctional Services for 26 years. Prior to that, he worked as a laboratory technician with CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh for 12 years. Most recently, he has worked part-time as Dannemora's village constable.

The nonpartisan village election will be held Wednesday, March 18, from 12-9 p.m., at the village office, 121 Emmons St. The ballot will also include the names of incumbent trustees Eric Jarvis and Richard J. Scholl, who are both unopposed in seeking reelection to four-year terms.
