St. Pat events slated

INDIAN LAKE - Indian Lake will welcome the Irish - and those who wish they were - to a weekend celebration March 13-15.

The community will host its fourth annual St. Patrick's Day weekend celebration with a series of events.

"Every year it seems to get bigger and better," Bonnie Liddle, events and activities coordinator for the town of Indian Lake, said. "It's fun."

Kicking things off will be the annual St. Patrick's parade Friday, March 13, at 3 p.m. The parade will begin at Crow Hill Road and march to the intersection of Routes 28 and 30.

The parade will feature the elementary school contestants of the community hat contest. Students make the hats in school and wear them in the parade. Prizes will be awarded to the largest, smallest, prettiest and ugliest hats.

The parade will also include the school band and local fire department as well as dogs participating in the "Mutt Strut."

That evening there will be a volleyball tournament at Indian Lake Central School beginning at 7 p.m.

The celebration will resume Saturday, March 14, with a Kids Carnival at the school gym 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The carnival will be sponsored by the school industrial arts club.

At 1 p.m. there will be Irish Road Bowling.

For those non-Irish, Irish Road Bowling features teams of four people alternating throws, rolls, tosses of a 28-ounce iron ball from point A to point B on a road.

"It doesn't sound that exciting, but people have a lot fun doing it," Liddle said. 'Every year it grows."

The 2008 Irish Road Bowling attracted 21 teams. This year Liddle expects 25 teams or more to participate.

The course is to be determined and the entry fee is $20 for each four-person team. Registration will start at noon at the town hall.

The St. Patrick's Day weekend celebration will conclude Sunday, March 15, with the third annual "Mutt Strut" at 1 p.m. at the Indian Lake ski hut.

Dogs will be judged on looks, personality and any other feature they have.
