Panthers Skate to Conference Final Four

Both the Middlebury Panthers men's and women's ice hockey teams won their respective quarterfinal games in the NESCAC tournament this past weekend, and both will compete for conference championships this weekend. Going along with those conference champions are automatic bids to the NCAA tournament.

The men's squad defeated Hamilton College in the quarter finals 6-2 this past Saturday in Middlebury. Charles Nerbak and Martin Drolet each scored a pair of goals to lead the Panthers to the post season win. Mason Graddock contributed a goal and an assist, while Jamie McKenna rounded out the Panthers scoring with a goal. In the net Doug Raeder stopped 17 shots, nine of them coming in a busy second period.

The Panthers will travel to Amherst college this weekend to face Williams College Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. A win in that one will earn them a spot in Saturday's Conference Championship game.

Heather McCormack scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the women's team to a 3-1 quarterfinal win over Williams college this past Saturday. After a scoreless opening period, senior forward Annmarie Cellino put the Panthers up 1-0 with her ninth goal of the year. Williams tied the game at 1-1 with 15 minutes left to play when Jacqueline Berglass scored on an assist from Tracey Ferriter. But it didn't take Middlebury long to reclaim their lead. With 12:34 left to play McCormack and Heidi Woodworth set up Maggie Melberg, who nailed the game winner, her 11th of the year. McCormack provided insurance when she scored her lone goal with just 3:55 left. Middlebury controlled the contest, out shooting their guests 47-11.
