MINERVA - Ciara and Lauren VanCour, daughters of James and Dawn VanCour, Alexandria Bay, and grand daughters of Lee and Gloria Murdie of Minerva, have been selected to play on a 16U girls all-star summer touring team based out of Boston, Mass.
The New England Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) has a pool of 172 female hockey players. NEWHL summer touring teams consist of a 14U, 16U and 19U level. Each team has a roster of 17 players. The girls will participate in five AAA tournaments in Canada and the United States. Two tournaments have been completed. The first was the Montreal Ice Storm AAA Tournament in Montreal, Canada, June 5-7 where team NEWHL finished fourth with a record of 1-2-1. The second tournament was the Vermont Summer Classic in Burlington, Vermont June 19-21. Team NEWHL finished third with a record of 2-1-1 losing in the semi finals 3-2.
Ciara and Lauren have three tournaments remaining. The Chowder Cup in Boston, Mass, July 30-Aug. 2; Magog Silver Seven Invitational in Montreal Aug. 7-9 and the Challenge Cup in Boston, Aug. 21-23.
Both girls have been selected to participate in the NAHA Summer Showcase July 6-10 at the University of Vermont. A total of 136 girls from 23 states and four provinces in Canada have been selected to participate in a five day evaluation process that features 52 college scouts. A three day tournament will be held to determine gold, silver and bronze medal winners.
