Funds help local projects

SHELBURNE - A significant number of children from Shelburne, Charlotte or Hinesburg will have the valuable experience of summer camp thanks to grants from Shelburne Charlotte Hinesburg Interfaith Projects (SCHIP). The second cycle of grants for 2009 from the locally-based non-profit distributed $8,800 from the fund created through the sale of good used clothing and homegoods.

SCHIP received requests for over $18,800 in grants in time for the May 30 deadline, and chose the grants to fill based on guidelines including commitment to service to residents of the three towns as well as the track record of the organization making the request. Size of grants in the current round ranged from $500 to $3,000.

Grants to support programs that will benefit children were made to Stern Center for Language & Learning, Camp Agape, Shelburne Arts Center and the Community Friends Mentoring/Howard Family Therapeutic Riding Program. The Essential Goods Program of Recycle North also received a grant for vouchers distributed in partnership with social service agencies for purchase of items at Recycle North.

SCHIP also made a grant to Trinity Episcopal Church to help with the purchase and installation of a microphone receiver and hand-held microphone in the McClure Room to improve the quality of sound during presentations ranging from Senior Luncheons and Rotary meetings to AA and Al-Anon meetings and special programs for the community.

Before the current round of grant making, SCHIP had given a total of more than $170,000 since they first began making grants in April 2005. The mission of SCHIP, which was formed in 2003 by ten faith communities in the three towns, is to work together to raise funds for grants to improve the lives of neighbors and strengthen the communities. Funds are raised through the operation of SCHIP's Treasure Resale Shop in Shelburne Village where donated good used clothing and household items are sold. The shop is operated by a small paid staff and many volunteers.

The next grant deadline will be the last day of September. Grant information and forms can be picked up at SCHIP's Treasure Resale Shop, 5404 Shelburne Rd. in Shelburne, or at the offices of the town clerks in Shelburne, Charlotte and Hinesburg.
