NEWCOMB - The small community of Newcomb is preparing for some of its biggest events of the year in the coming weekends. The town-wide garage sale and fire department's steak roast are rapidly approaching.

Next Saturday, July 18 around 20 locations will be set up for the town-wide yard sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The annual event will take place, rain or shine.

Event coordinator Nancy Tracy said both food and maps would be available. Maps of the sales will be available at both ends of town, at St. Barbara's Episcopal Church, and Aunt Polly's Inn. In addition to the private yard sales, people will also set up tables at the fire hall to sell items.

The sale should be a fun event, and people may find both bargains and treasures.

"You never can tell what you'll find, there could be some great bargains - and I hear there's some great antiques involved," Tracy said.

The following Saturday, July 25, will see one of the town's most popular annual traditions - the 44th annual Newcomb Volunteer Fire Department steak roast and parade.

The day kicks off with a parade at noon, featuring participants from local organizations, the youth program, fire companies and possibly a band. The line-up is set at 11 a.m., beginning at the Goodnow Flow Road.

Immediately following the parade, people can head to the Newcomb town beach to participate in the popular steak roast, said Fire Chief Mark Yandon. Tickets are $13 each, and entitle diners to steak, a baked potato, coleslaw and corn on the cob, along with a soda. Last year, 675 dinners were served.

"We do not sell any beer or alcoholic beverages, but we do allow people to bring their own," said Yandon, adding that no glass bottles were allowed on the beach.
