Saranac Farmers Market kicks off

SARANAC - The Saranac Farmers Market was such a success last year, vendors are joining together to host it again.

The market will return to the pavilion behind Saranac Town Hall on State Route 3 this Saturday, July 11, offering fresh produce, baked goods and other products from local vendors.

Lisa M. Racette, who will serve as market manager this year, said several vendors will be returning from last year's market, with a few new ones lined up as well.

"We're trying to expand a little bit from last year," said Racette, who noted maple products, Adirondack chairs, and even live chicks are also among items expected to be offered. "We want to do what we did last year, just more of it."

The market was reestablished last June after an extended hiatus, much to the delight of vendors and people who attended the market, said Racette. It was important to keep the momentum going, she added.

"It's very important to have the market in Saranac," said Racette, whose own business, Rock Bottom Farm, will be at the market again this year. "We have a lot of elderly people here, especially, so it saves them from traveling or having to find someone to help them travel into Plattsburgh."

Among the new things planned for this year's market are the hours of operation. The market will be open earlier, starting at 10 a.m., and ending at 2 p.m. Currently, plans are to have the market open Saturdays until Sept. 12, though that could change, said Racette.

"It could extend longer, depending on how the vendors feel about it," she said. "We've had a late start to the growing season, so we'll probably have more to offer later in the year and want to keep going."

The market will also offer an activity table for parents bringing their children with them, said Racette.
