New resources to be an effective caregiver

Are you helping a family member or friend with cooking, cleaning, managing medication, making appointments or meeting other needs? Caregiving can be a tough and lonely job. To be effective as a caregiver, you must also take good care of yourself.

Terra Nova Films launched a video caregiving Web site dedicated to "streaming" visual educational material to family caregivers. These videos include real people in real situations. Each video has "Beyond the Video" sections providing additional information and ideas to consider. The Web site will eventually include a social networking community. Visit www.videocaregiving.org

There's a video on Caregiver Wellness at: www.agingcare.com/videos/95745/caregiverwellness.htm. This site includes a discussion group where you can talk about caregiving for your aging parents or spouse and find answers to questions about elder care. New stories are added each week. Subjects include: Caregiver support, housing, daily care, health conditions, money and legal care.

If technology is not for you, Clinton County Office for the Aging is sponsoring a caregiver workshop, Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 6 p. m. at St. Peter's Church in the Emmaus room. There will be several speakers such as Carol Allen - 2007 Caregiver of the Year, Rachael Hite - Palliative care nurse from CVPH, Mary Buckley-LaBonte - Caregiver Resource Center. There will be discussions, information, refreshments and more. Call 565-4620 for more information.
