Vicki Marking named chamber of commerce Volunteer of the Year

PLATTSBURGH - The Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce's Annual Dinner and Dance welcomed hundreds of chamber members to the State University of New York at Plattsburgh's Angell College Center Ballrooms Jan. 23.

Aside from the dining and dancing, awards were given out to respected members of the community for their various achievements.

The surprise of the evening was when Vicki L. Marking, community relations coordinator for Meadowbrook Healthcare, was chosen by the chamber as Volunteer of the Year.

"Anything that I do for the chamber, I've never even considered volunteer work," Marking said to the audience. "This is a complete honor."

Aside from volunteering with the chamber, Marking is also active in the Champlain Valley Business & Professional Women's Club, Plattsburgh Noon Rotary, Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York, Senior Citizens Council of Clinton County and the town of Chazy.

"Vicki has the energy of 10 people," said chamber executive vice president Jody A. Parks. "She is always willing to help and has a way of making everyone around her smile."

"It's really nice to be recognized by other people," Marking added. "I really enjoy being involved in the community."

Other awards given throughout the night included Business of the Year, Businessperson of the Year, Small Business of the Year, and a special award in honor of Gene M. Chauvin, who was the chamber's chairperson during the last year.

"Gene Chauvin has been the go-to guy," said chamber president Garry F. Douglas. "And [he] is intent on continuing that even after being chairman."

Douglas added the award was, "In appreciation for his unselfish service, and total commitment to the people of the North Country."

Graymont Materials was chosen by the chamber as Business of the Year, with sales manager Scott Bombard receiving the award on the company's behalf.

"In our company, we've always judged the worth of a company by how they treat their community, and how their community treats them," said Bombard. "I'm very honored to accept this [award] for all the employees at Graymont Materials."
